World Cup 2026 Opening Round Recap: 20 Matches, Early Standings & Key Storylines
Published: June 17, 2026 · By Mundial24h Editorial
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is underway across the United States, Canada and Mexico. After the first wave of group-stage fixtures, 20 of 104 matches have been completed. Here is our editorial recap of the biggest results, surprise packages and what the early tables tell us about the road to the Round of 32.
Headline results
- Mexico 2–0 South Africa (Estadio Azteca) — The hosts opened the tournament in front of a roaring Mexico City crowd. El Tri controlled the Azteca and take an early Group A lead alongside South Korea.
- United States 4–1 Paraguay (MetLife Stadium) — A statement win for the co-hosts in the New York metro area. Four goals underline American attacking intent in Group D.
- Germany 7–1 Curaçao (Gillette Stadium, Boston) — The most lopsided scoreline so far. Die Mannschaft sent an early warning to Group E rivals Ivory Coast and Ecuador.
- Argentina 3–0 Algeria (SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles) — The defending champions began their title defence with authority in Group J.
- France 3–1 Senegal (BC Place, Vancouver) — Les Bleus recovered from a competitive first half to take three points in Group I.
- Norway 4–1 Iraq (Estadio Azteca) — Erling Haaland's Norway announced themselves with a four-goal performance in Mexico City.
Upsets & tight contests
Not every favourite had it easy. Brazil drew 1–1 with Morocco in Atlanta, leaving both sides on a point in Group C behind Scotland, who beat Haiti 1–0 in Houston. Netherlands and Japan shared a 2–2 thriller in Miami, while Spain were held 0–0 by Cape Verde in Kansas City — a result that could define a competitive Group H.
Canada's 1–1 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina at SoFi Stadium means Group B is wide open after Qatar and Switzerland also drew 1–1 in Dallas. Four teams on one point after one matchday is exactly the kind of chaos the 48-team format was designed to produce.
Early group leaders (after Matchday 1)
Several groups already have clear front-runners. Mexico and South Korea lead Group A on three points. Scotland top Group C. The USA and Australia share Group D with perfect records. Germany and Ivory Coast have winning starts in Group E, while Sweden's 5–1 win over Tunisia puts them ahead in Group F.
Argentina and Austria both won in Group J, setting up a fascinating second-round clash between two in-form European and South American sides. England, Croatia, Ghana and Panama — all in Group L — are still waiting for their first kickoff as the schedule rolls through the opening week.
What to watch next
The second round of group fixtures will test whether early leaders can consolidate or whether underdogs like Cape Verde, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Morocco can build on encouraging openings. With 12 groups of four and only the top two plus eight best third-placed teams advancing, every point matters more than ever.
